About the event
SINCUERPO is a solo exhibition by Maltese abstract artist Stefan Carbonaro, opening at Mitħna tal-Għaqba, Naxxar, from 18th of March to 5th of April 2026.
The exhibition presents a restrained and contemplative body of work that explores painting as an act of shedding — removing layers, form, and weight to reveal what remains beneath the surface.
Concept
The title SINCUERPO, Spanish for “without body,” does not refer to absence as emptiness. Instead, it suggests a state reached through release. In this exhibition, the body is not depicted but left behind, allowing the paintings to exist as traces of movement, memory, and presence without enclosure.
Created through a physical process of layering, scraping, and removal, the works reflect a deliberate shift away from accumulation. Carbonaro’s approach mirrors the conceptual core of the exhibition unburdening the surface so that space, texture, and mark can carry meaning.
The exhibition experience has been carefully considered to reinforce these ideas. Minimal wall text, generous spacing, and the historic setting of Mitħna tal-Għaqba create a calm, immersive environment. Visitors are encouraged to slow down and engage intuitively, reflecting on personal experiences of transformation, letting go, and renewal.
